No More Squeezable Water Bottles
Recently, we have noticed some instances of inappropriate usage of sports water bottles during the school day.
While we understand that the majority of students have been using their water bottles as intended, unfortunately, a few incidents have occurred where these bottles were used in a manner that negatively impacted others. Specifically, there have been instances of spraying other students and the floors, which disrupts the learning environment and creates a real slipping hazard for everyone.
In light of these occurrences, we kindly request all students to discontinue the use of sports water bottles during the school day. We recognize that this decision might inconvenience those who have been responsibly using their water bottles. However, the primary concern is to maintain a safe, distraction-free, and respectful atmosphere for everyone.

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) to resume August 30th.
This year we welcome a new GATE teacher for our Gifted and Talented Education program. Thankfully, this is a person already in our Blue Jay family. Ms. Zachau from the 6th grade team will be moving into this role on August 30th. To make this possible, we are shifting classes to better utilize our assets. This means that there will be only one teacher for each 6th grade subject.
- Ms. DeGuira English
- Mr. Strong Math
- Ms. Cecil Science
- Dr. Gill Social Studies
Ms. Zachau will assist this transition as she waits to begin her new responsibility on the 30th up in room 312.

Kidizenship Contest
All across Nashville, yards are filled with signs promoting the names of candidates running for office – people with big ideas for the future of our city. In the coming weeks, voters will choose our new mayor and elect members of the Metro Council, which creates local policies and provides essential urban services. Elections are an important way for civic leaders to share their vision for progress.
But what is the future you see? What is one positive change you would make in Nashville if the voters put you in charge?
Maybe you envision a state-of-the-art public transit system. Maybe you see a new approach to relief for food insecure and unhoused Nashvillians. Maybe you have a plan to improve safety at your school. Maybe you see ways to make Nashville carbon neutral or more climate resilient Maybe you see green roofs, community gardens and civic art projects, expanded city parks, or stronger municipal recycling and composting programs.
Submit a visual representation of your idea using a range of 2-D media–drawing, painting, computer graphics, collaging, or photography–along with a brief description of 100-500 words explaining your idea and how it will affect our city.
All submissions must be received by 11:59 PM Central Time on September, 22, 2023.
To be eligible to win, you must be between the ages of 8-18.
To enter: Send your name, age, contact information (personal email and phone number for entrants 13 and over; parent or guardian’s email and phone number for entrants ages 8-12), and submission (a visual representation of your idea and a description of 100-500 words) to [email protected].
Contests will be judged in two age categories 8-12 and 13-18. 1st prize in each contest & category: $1000 | 2nd: $750 | 3rd: $500.
You certainly do not have to be a fine artist to enter! You may use computer graphic programs like Canva—more on those below—or crayons. But we ask that you not use any AI image generators, such as DALL-E 2.

Corporate Sponsors Needed to Support West End Middle School!
The WEMS PTSO are selling banners with your company's logo on it- banners will cost $1000, be 3'x5', and placed on WEMS campus. Advertise your company and support our awesome school!
Our corporate sponsors help fund important PTSO functions, such as teacher appreciation, equipment and uniforms for our sports teams, funding for after-school events and field trips, and classroom wish list items. We want to bridge the gap between our funding and our school needs. An investment in our local school is an investment in your community. Together, let’s invest in West! In addition, we will be holding a silent auction in the spring and would love any donations of gift cards or business services if you are not ready to commit to sponsorship. Please complete the below sponsor form and mail with payment. A check is the preferred method of payment. Please email Melissa Fuller at [email protected] with your graphic that we can print on the banner. See form on this link....

Survey Permissions Change for 2023-24
In years past, the default has been “yes” for students to participate in the district’s School Climate Survey unless their parents opted them out. However, due to new legislation (TN Code § 49-2-211), this year, the default is “no” unless parents opt them in by either submitting permission online at permissions.mnps.org or returning a signed paper permission form.
Please return permission forms (paper or online) for your survey participation rates to ensure we have rich data about our school climate from our students’ perspectives.
