Q1 Benchmarks
Every quarter, students will take Benchmark exams in each of their core classes (English, Math, Science and Social Studies) to see how well they are progressing on mastering their standards. These are only over what students should have learned that quarter. They take these in their regular classes on computers. And although these are not used for a grade, we do want students to try their best to show what they know. There will be an incentive fun day provided for students on Thursday during their related arts time for those who do their best on the tests! Below is the schedule of testing per day. It is different for each grade level.

Nationwide Emergency Alert Test:
On October 4, 2023 beginning at approximately 1:20 PM, FEMA will be conducting a nationwide emergency notification test. In addition to the traditional radio and TV warnings, they will also be pushing a test message to all suitably equipped cell phones within range of a cell-tower. Phones will likely sound a warning tone and vibrate. If there are a lot of phones this could be quite disruptive and triggering for individuals with certain special needs. Please be aware as all phones turned on will alert at this time.

Boy Scouts to visit Monday at Lunch
The Boy Scouts is recruiting. They will bring flyers for interested students to lunch on Monday. There is no pressure to sign-up or join. This is merely an informational opportunity.

Letter from Ms. Nation
Dear Parents,
It has been a joy to teach your student math throughout this year and work together to watch your student succeed. However, I will be leaving West End for an opportunity to teach abroad. My last day at West End will be October 19, 2023. I did not intend to leave midyear, but had an incredible opportunity come up teaching with the Department of Defense, and had to wait to start there due to delays.
I am so thankful for the opportunity I had to work at West End and become an integral part of the community here. Working with your children has been a great experience through getting to know them and their curiosity in math. Mr. Stephens and the administration at West End have a plan to have another teacher step into my role so that your students don't miss valuable content.
I appreciate each of you and your understanding. I will genuinely miss all of my students and wish you the best as you move forward in 8th grade and beyond. If you'd like to contact me with any questions or concerns, please email me directly at [email protected] or call the school office at 615-298-8425.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Nation, MAT
8th Grade Math Teacher
